The only Tudor Barn in London
There are many Tudor Barns remaining throughout the English countryside. This is because building materials & architecture had reached the point in the 16th century where structures could stand the test of time.
But another factor is that buildings constructed in this era represent an important period of English history & therefore are perhaps treasured more than early periods in history.
The Tudor era, 1485 to 1603 was a time of great change & upheaval in the history of England - a time of the Renaissance when artists & thinkers started to free themselves from religious constraints.
Tudor Barn Eltham, was not only built in this important era, it also belonged to the family that helped drive some of the major changes in England during this time. Margaret Roper & her father were influential in driving change.
Margaret, who was one of the first female academics, was friends with and worked with Erasmus the influential Renaissance Humanist & Sir Thomas More, her father advised Henry the viii about Reformation & even communicated directly with the Protestant Reformer Martin Luther.
So you would expect a building with such historic significance to be well known & recognised. Alas Tudor Barn Eltham in GreenwichS; is often overlooked by tourists & historical buffs because of the huge wealth of other historical buildings in the borough. But we aim to change that by placing Tudor Barn Eltham back onto the heritage map. Don't forget this beautiful building is the only Tudor Barn in London, helped shape England as we know it today & provided inspiration for Edith Nesbit the great Victorian writer & Socialist thinker.
Lets look at some external features of the building:
